A practical way forward

Practice should make the next step clearer—not more confusing.

“I feel that I have saved myself from injury and from many wasted hours in the practice room because of Rich’s teaching.”

Hitting a wall no matter how much you practice?

Repeating the same passage will not fix a timing mistake.

When your bow starts a note before your finger is ready, that note blurs. Practicing the passage again just repeats the problem. I’ll show you a simple way to change the timing.

  • Get unstuck: see why repeating a passage can reinforce the same unclear sound.
  • Hear a cleaner note: get your finger ready before the bow moves.
  • Know what to practice next: use one drill with the music you’re already learning.

Student stories

Progress sounds different for every player.

Hear from students and families who have worked with me to build stronger habits, prepare for meaningful opportunities, and feel more confident in the music in front of them.

Their paths are different. My focus stays the same: clearer practice, more specific feedback, and turning each difficult problem into a workable next step.

My story

A practical path to a life on stage.

I didn’t follow a conventional conservatory path into The Philadelphia Orchestra. I built my career through disciplined work, practical problem-solving, and a belief that progress comes from understanding what to change—not simply trying harder.

Since joining The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1998, I’ve brought that same standard into every lesson. I help students make complex technical and musical problems more visible, more manageable, and more musical.

My teaching is direct, patient, and built around the player in front of me—whether you’re returning to the instrument, preparing for college, or working toward your next audition.
